My rating: ∗∗∗∗*/5

This book starts off with an awkward stereotypical teen romance break up that had me wary of getting into a book with an easily predictable plotline.  That being said, it quickly gets out of its awkward beginnings and dragged me right into its deep dark void.  The themes of this book are mature and dark and it’s refreshing to see the authors addressing them.  Readers that are familiar with Jay Kristoff may know by now that his books offer some really dark and tragic characters and this book is no different.  Themes including genocide, refugees, quarantining of the sick and censoring of information are thick throughout this novel.  The format of the book makes it a quick read and there are small details everywhere to piece the story together yourself.  It’s less a traditional story and more like letting your imagination run wild piecing components of the story together.  The later introductions of a zombie like infestation and an out of control AI make this a thrilling adventure and a gut wrenching read.  There are a number of good plot twists that some of the more imaginative readers may predict but it offers many great surprises to those that might not be able to guess at them.   I thought the ending of the book was well tied together with just enough space for there to be a sequel.  I hope there is one planned because I’m hooked.  If you like strong female protagonists and are looking for a thrilling fast read, this is a good choice for you.
